Depending on how you look at it its either six feet of iambic (i.e. iambic hexameter), or three and a half feet of iambic and two and a half feet of trochee. These are both absolutely typical english meters. German too. They are very very easy to formulate and often times we speak that way without even realizing it. That means they often sound the most natural, especially in a song. Music is often rhythm based and meter in song lyrics often ties in with the rhythm.
Personally I think it makes more sense to look at it as one line, but thats just me.
