New Apartment
I’ve finally left Virginia and moved to Boston (the Cambridge-Somerville area). I’m really excited. I try to avoid the teenage-ish tendency to blame everything on wherever I am (“I just need to get out of this town! This place sucks! Hey, can you put on another Simple Plan CD?”). But I really think the Virginia town I lived in wasn’t my kind of place. So Boston’s going to be good. I feel at home here already (it helps that I have some lovely friends in the area). Hooray for things happening!
I put a whiteboard in the front hallway so everyone could leave notes and so forth. Hmm. A shared space that anyone can write/draw in …

I did something similar to that once.
I used to keep a diary (I only gave it up a couple of years ago) - and I drew on each page to look like a Blogger page.
I only bothered to keep it up for a few weeks. Turns out I have even less interesting stuff to say when I know it’s just me reading.

I think you’ve hit on an opportunity to make a few million bucks here. Sell a whiteboard branded by both Stephen Colbert and Wikipedia called “the Wikiboard” or “the Wikipedia Whiteboard.” Pre-print the MediaWiki template on the board, provide black (for text) and blue (for links) dry erase markers, magnets that are pre-printed with the templates (”{{unreferenced}}”, “{{pp-semi-protected}}”, etc.), and offer accessories like a digital camera to save revisions, a donation tray (”Your continued donations keep wikipedia running!”), and the option to have a Top 500 Wikipedia editor come revise your whiteboard for a nominal fee.

Fantastic. In my high school days, a few years before Wikipedia launched, our physics teacher used to pair us up and ask us to work out problems on small whiteboards. Those that were the first to get the answer correct got to display their handiwork to the class.
A friend and I always turned our board into a “white-browser,” complete with color graphics (well, depending on how many markers we could commandeer), navigation bar and advertising space. At first the ads were fake, but at one point a classmate paid us a whole nickel (!) for a 3″x3″ square on our board.

FYI, Sharpies won’t keep it from being editable. If you scribble over sharpie ink with whiteboard markers and then erase it off…the sharpie ink will be gone.

Tips for living in the Cambridge-Somerville area: don’t drive Mass Ave between Harvard and Porter (it’s all lights); all roads lead to Punjabi Dhaba; Market Basket is vastly cheaper than Star; eat Wang’s; and when it doubt, park illegally in Cambridge, not Somerville - the ticket is cheaper.

You Moved? But I just saw your car the other week! I also got a couple of No Raptor shirts, and was going to go down to the Virgina Living Museum and have my photo taken with the raptor statue. Yep, Hampton Roads can be sleepy, but I hear the same about almost anywhere that’s not a major city.
Also, hypertext for whiteboards would be the shiznit. Tap on the board, the first board falls down off the wall, revealing another board behind it.

Like, think about it. Julius Caesar was crossing the Rubicon. The Roman populace was like ‘WTF man?’ and he replied ‘penis penis penis.’ Think about it man. You might not know it, but those three words that describe the masculine genitalia… they forged our world, that phrase made us who we are.

If you really want to lock the whiteboard, buy some clear glaze that won’t chip off. It’ll lock anything that’s over or under it, more permanently than sharpies will.

Speaking as someone who moved to Somerville (Teele Sq. neighborhood) recently, I have one thing to add to the above suggestions: stay the hell away from Foodmaster (on the corner of Broadway and Alewife Brook Pkwy) if you have any alternative. The liquor store just next door has a pretty good selection for its size, though.

Speaking of human hamsterballs (what? Someone somewhere had to be speaking of it)… In Edmonton (Alberta, Canada), inside the world’s largest mall, inside the indoor waterpark, you can go inside a ‘hamsterball’ and run on top of the water in the wave pool. It’s an outrageous $10 for 5 minutes, but hey, just to say you did it. ;-)

Maryr: Well, maybe I overstated. It’s just overpriced, limited selection, and kinda grungy. There’s a Stop&Shop not too far up the road into Arlington, after Broadway merges with Mass Ave, and a Trader Joes in the same area, so if you can get that far there are alternatives.

Canada is NOT raptor-free. Canadian raptors are just smarter and better at hiding. I think they use the Royal Tyrell Museum (http://www.tyrrellmuseum.com/) as their base of operations. Have you seen the landscape around Drumheller, Alberta? It’s like stepping into another world, and I think the Raptors keep it that way on purpose. And I suspect Dr Phil Currie of being in their employ.

This is hilarious. :-) I’m a Wikipedia admin and a huge xkcd fan and I think you have to be both to completely appreciate it. I especially like how the TOC lists “Controversy” and “In popular culture”, which happen to reference a couple of the more controversial practices in Wikipedia (POV forking and trivia sections). The languages list is cute too. What do the last two tabs at the top say? Great stuff.

In case you haven’t already figured it out, you generally don’t need a car to get around unless you’re shlepping a crap load of stuff. Otherwise, the T is your friend. Or at least you would want it to be when you need to get from point A to point B.
That said, I hope you enjoy exploring some of the neighborhoods around downtown. I grew up in the South End which is adjacent to Back Bay and is nowhere next to South Boston. It was walking distance to Copley (pronounced cop-lee and not cope-lee) Square and Newbury Street.
Boston has changed a lot since I’ve lived there, but there are still some neat places to hang out and do stuff. Enjoy your new home!

The thing that made me laugh out loud was that someone had literally written “Penis Penis Penis” on the Wiki page, since this has always been my shorthand for the need to have countermeasures when designing systems that “anyone can edit”.

Now that you’ve left VA I’ve gotten a spot here at William and Mary in Williamsburg (moved in on Aug. 24), though I had solidified plans to attend only at about the point that you moved. Now all you need to do is move from Cambridge so that my transfer to Harvard is approved (heh, joking). Need an AC, though. Cambridge must be nice and cool this time of year, in the 80s rather than super humid 90s.

I have a friend going to Berklee right now…
His name is Cal, if you ever meet him… Listen to him rock, I think he has some talent. He was a member of Fantastic International here in Tulsa, OK.. But since he’s a Freshmen at Berklee, he had to move to Boston. I’ve heard from him, he’s loving it to death.
