Youtube Audio Preview
Wow. It seems someone at YouTUBE took this comic seriously and decided to add an “Audio Preview” feature. Now you can hear your comments read aloud to you.

Of course, it’s an optional button using speech synth rather than a mandatory dramatic reading, so it’ll just be used for entertainment by people who haven’t played with a speech synthesizer before:

But then, after a little more browsing around, I see this:

So maybe there’s hope after all.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I lol’d.
at the simplicity this very comment. wow.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
The problem will be that instead of actually realizing the moronic-ness (is that a word?) of youtube posts, the authors will instead refuse to use the audio preview, and continue to post spam. (Not advertising spam, content spam)
October 8th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I think they need to add a feature where the comment is read in the voice of a whiny 10 year old girl - the average maturity level of a youtube commenter.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
“(The audio preview of my own post sounded moronic!)”
I love this. There’s something almost poetic about it.
It’s funny, because the moment I saw that feature on Youtube, I came right here because I knew there would be a blag. I just knew it.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Oh man. Idiocy recursion. This is a slippery slope, people.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
@Andrew
Regarding the refusal of users to listen to their own comments…perhaps they can lookup how many comments a user has made that has been given a negative rating. A user with an average rating of -5 (or whatever) will initiate the playback of their comments automatically before it is posted.
Once a user reaches another milestone of -10, a simple message indicating the user is a douchebag could be displayed so that they are self aware.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Wow, that is increadibly awesome! :D Hope that they’ll keep it!
October 8th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
It’s amazing that Randal wields such awesome power!
But… will he use it for good, or for evil?
October 8th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
“(The audio preview of my own post sounded moronic!)”
Unfortunately this illustrates that audio preview does not have effect the xkcd comic intended.
This poster blames the audio preview for the moronicity of his own post.
(The audio preview of this post sounded fantastic!)
October 8th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Hahaha, amazing! They so took the idea from you.
The free speech ideologist in me is very pleased that words like motherfucker are still allowed. Not that I need to use those words. I just like the possibility.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
I saw that, that’s awesome.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Now it will be much easier to write the windows worm.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
The second I saw that I came here to check the blag, how awesome haha. I’m not sure how useful the feature is, but I’m 100% with AtlasRider on his idea. You get brownie points.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
The dramatic readings had me in stitches. Crying like a babby. Best thing in the whole WORLDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!
October 8th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

XKCD will rule the world (of the internet)!

What? A powerful public company recreating your comic? If I were you, I’ll surely suspect about my so-called “reallity”.
Wake up Randall (”Truman Show” references are also applicable).
October 8th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
dude, you are the man! that’s awesome.
reading youtube comments is one of the only fun things left to do on the internet. oh and read your comic too
October 8th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Replace “xkcd” with the string you want spoken. Use plus signs for spaces.
October 8th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
xkcd rules. Quite literally. If only politicians could be steered, erm, inspired by comics as easily as geeks.
October 8th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
I just saw this feature and immediately came over to see if there was a blag.
It’s a really bad voice synth though, the one on my computer sound so much better.
October 8th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
With blurred names and without links to the videos in question, I am forced to assume that you fabricated those screen shots.
October 8th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Nice work, Randall. :-)
October 8th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Wow! I came across this feature a minute ago and immediately rushed here to preach the good news. This is what happens when Youtube is owned by Google. They LISTEN.
The audio preview feature is still quite buggy. For me, it cuts out about four seconds before it should, and the voice is difficult to understand. However, there IS hope. I must say Well Done to the both of you!
October 8th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
OGM thats awsome!!!!!!!!!
i got mad lulz from tihs…mclame is a douche lol its really funny hearing that read out lout…i didnt no computers could “do” that…talking i mean…teh prob with youtube coments is that youtubers are all morons … thatll change wunce this feature starts getting used!!!!
(Note: Stylistic satire of YouTube comments is hurtful to your intelligence. I feel a bit dumber than I did just a few minutes ago. I imagine after writing this comic Randall’s IQ was cut in half for a few days.)
October 8th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Greatest thought ever, and it actually came to be. Listen to it before you submit it. It’s funny because it’s true, and came to be. Thank you xkcs. I hope it works. :D
October 8th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
I request the update of “life imitates xkcd” section of wikipedia article.
October 8th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Wouldn’t a feature like that be useful enough for people who are say… blind or partially sighted?
October 8th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
It caught me off guard because it sounds like a synthesized version of my own voice.
October 8th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Nice, now its ultra easy to make it into a virus.
You could probably even do it with html injection.
October 8th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Oh my [non] god. Life will never be the same… They should require audio preview until you have a certain amount of up-rated comments.
October 8th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
But how would we force the idiots to leave their speakers on?
This is going to wind up involving some very elaborate hacking…
October 8th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
That rocks.
October 8th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
i just noticed it on youtube and was like “wait…. didn’t that comic make a joke about that?”.
its great.
October 8th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Oh wow. Now I definitely need to find a way to implement “xkcd in Popular Culture” in any Wikipedia page that i can.
Hearing myself say something is really, really fun. It makes me think, Would people think I sound like that? So, I guess it does its job, and does it well. Anf for the record, I post nice youtube comments, honestly! C:
October 8th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
When I write “Weird Al”, the audio prewiew says “Weird Alabama”.
October 8th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
I was playing with it myself and several people point out XKCD as a likely inspiration. And the “play” button has been put where the “post comment” button used to be so a hell of a lot of people are clicking it accidentally. So in many cases people are getting a default dramatic reading of their comment without intending it.
October 8th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
I hope that maybe the internet will start using other of the sometimes childish (but always clever) ideas here at xkcd. Maybe one day, in the future, his ideas may be intergrated into society (although if he gets it into the internet he’s basically taken over the world!!). Though I agree with others here that we need to do something about the douchebags who simply will not listening to their comment, maybe if the comment is “douchebagyish” enough, a message should pop up saying “Hey moron, ya you, obviously it took you a long time to rake your brain for that many swear words, but instead of using up all that time looking for cuss words, why don’t you do something productive. Like… oh I don’t know, kill yourself. It would offend a lot less people than your comment would.”
October 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I totally called it :)

October 8th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
I noticed it a couple of minutes ago, and immediately thought “XKCD is behind this”. I checked the blag, and here it was… It’s amazing to know that important people will listen to your (awesome) ideas.
October 8th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
If only it would read it using Morgan Freeman’s voice.
October 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Nice. Very nice. Looks like you’ve kicked just that much more ass, Randall.
October 8th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
W00T! “Remember, with great power comes great responsibility.” ;-)
October 8th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
That is truly the most amazing thing I have seen as a result of an XKCD comic. I am just hoping that people will actually use it.

I don’t see how it could be for “blind people”. If you’re blind, why would you _listen_ to videos that you can’t actually watch, or comment on just the audio portion? If you can see well enough to watch the video, you can see well enough to know what you’re typing.
October 9th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

How about persistent lifetime tracking of the poster’s average comment ratings? At 0, audio playback is optional, but at -1 it’s mandatory. At -10 the voice is switched to a child’s voice. At -25, it’s the voice of Gilbert Gottfried. And at -100, it’s dramatically read by Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump.

I’m sure google takes a lot of random input into account when developing new features. Just looking at Google “Goggles” should be enough proof for this.
October 10th, 2008 at 1:07 am
This is high-larious. I started seeking out truly moronic comments to test the audio-preview. While the monotonous vocalization doesn’t highlight the ‘douche-iness’ of a message, it certainly can’t cover it up.
Also — I propose: Anyone who, when confronted with a vocal synthesizer, does not immediately want to enter the following:
“I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
is not a properly functioning member of society.
October 10th, 2008 at 1:15 am

I hope it is just poor formatting. The other two would require me to pull out a flaming spam gun and shoot them in the face with banana cream pie(Like the crazy dude from gargoyles, only less harmless personal vendetta and more actual terror to strike into the hearts of my enemies.) So, for those keeping score: Richard Stallman gets a katana to match the one his comic counterpart wielded, Cory Doctorow doesn’t go anywhere without his goggles and cape, the comic about wood got a wikipedia entry edit-locked - and now the youtube audio preview! The blogosphere seems poised to collapse under the weight of your awesome. And then it shall become more powerful than we could ever imagine; an elegant community for a more civilized age.

Youtube should implement a feature where you can filter out comments that weren’t previewed via audio.
October 10th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Wow. This, if something, proves that google is not evil. Or, at least, if they’re evil, they’re hiding it pretty damn well.
October 10th, 2008 at 11:31 am
It’s great, but my internal logic circuits can’t handle the idea of an “audio preview”. It should be something like an “audio prehear” or “prelisten”. I don’t care if we have to make words up, at least the different parts of speech will agree with each other!
::implodes in a cloud of frustrated grammar::
October 10th, 2008 at 11:47 am
I am amazed that instead of realizing the idiocy of their own post, that poster blamed the audio synth for somehow twisting their Shakespearean greatness into moronic drivel. I’m just…wow.

“Ha Ha Ha Ha..You are an idiot!”
That ought to keep them morons away.

October 10th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
GAH!!! I just realized that this may lead to more moronic comments!
Pages will be spammed with strange messages ending in “audio preview is awesome!”. People are so stupid! If they want to play with the preview, it shouls STAY AS A PREVIEW. If they’re sandboxing, they should logically NOT POST IT. It’s pointless to post it, because we can’t hear it when it’s posted; only the writer can preview the voice. But, as usual, people will fail to be logical…
October 10th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Apparently it spells out the word “am”. It says the letters “a” “m”. Well done, YouTube. Interestingly, it pronounces “lackadaisical” properly. “superfluously” completely kills it, as does “thunk” (think back to your Borland C++ days and recall dealing with “thunking layers”). It won’t say the “++” in C++, either.

Xkcd comments should have their own audio preview too, if youtube has it why doesn’t this site?

Oh my God. This comic comes with PERFECT timing.
I was just a few hours ago fighting with iTunes to get their music compatible for my Sony mp3 player. In the end I used Amazon mp3 download, even though I have a $25 gift card for iTunes which is now useless.
October 13th, 2008 at 3:07 am
Oh. My. GOD! Things just keep getting better!!!
So… you know about my $25 gift card for iTunes which I thought was now useless because I ended up using Amazon mp3 download even though I had a $25 gift card for iTunes? WELL I just found a GREAT USE for it!

October 13th, 2008 at 4:28 am
You can download “iTunes Plus” songs that are DRM free, and are sometimes the same price as the DRM’d ones. In Rainbows, for example.
October 13th, 2008 at 6:50 am
Well having In Rainbows DRM free on itunes isn’t exactly much of an achievement considering Radiohead let you pay whatever you want for it, even nothing.
Defending iTunes for not putting DRM on an already DRM free and effectively “free” album, especially while iTunes is charging for it is a bit ridiculous.

October 13th, 2008 at 8:52 am
There are many places where one can legally get DRM-free music (not counting Amazon, because that is only available to US residents, which makes it much more restrictive than DRM since I can’t buy anything at all, no matter how much money or how many kinds of music player I have), but if I can’t find what I want without DRM, I buy it from iTunes. If I really need to get the music into another format, all I need to do is burn it to a CD and rip it again, which isn’t breaking any rules as far as I know, or at least if it is, then it’s interesting that the functionality is within iTunes itself.
Still, I guess it would be annoying if I had to do that with my entire iTunes-bought library, in that case I guess I’d have to find some kind of potentially illegal hack. Who knows? I’ll cross that bridge if I come to it, but for now, I plead YAGNI.

If you really have a crapload of problems with DRM’d songs you can just de-DRM them with a program like Tunebite or even Audacity. Pirating is not the only way to go, so don’t encourage theft please.
October 13th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
transcoding ruins audio quality, dipshit, and thats illegal anyway. just as much as piracy.
October 13th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
I’ll also throw in my shameless pitch for e-music (no, I don’t work there either) — it’s reasonably priced, the artists get a large cut of the sale, you can redownload anything you’ve previously downloaded for free from anywhere, and the music is DRM free.
That was enough for me.
P.S. Cheese is good.

October 13th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
“transcoding ruins audio quality, dipshit, and thats illegal anyway. just as much as piracy.”
But at the very least its not stealing, so you’re not damaging anyone in any way. And the quality difference is negligible at best, considering that the music is already being sold (generally) at 192 kb MP3’s (also some software DRM removal software has no loss at all, on Audacity it probably will depending on the recording settings).
October 13th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Wow. Seriously man, I think this may or may not be as close as any of us will ever get to immortality. Kudos
October 13th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
bachman said:
“[transcoding is] not stealing, so you’re not damaging anyone in any way.”
One could argue that if iTunes sells a DRM’ed song for $.99, or a DRM-free version of the same song for $1.49, you’re depriving them of the additional revenue.
Personally, I’d just as soon buy from a place (like eMusic, or Amazon for the USA-ians) that sells DRM-free. Less hassle, indisputably legal, and it demonstrates demand for the superior product. In a perfect world, demand for DRM-free music would eventually lead to DRM-free games, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
– A.
And once you’ve bought your DRM-free tunes, don’t go messing it up by sharing them on Morpheus (or whatever the deuce you kids are using these days.)
October 13th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
“One could argue that if iTunes sells a DRM’ed song for $.99, or a DRM-free version of the same song for $1.49, you’re depriving them of the additional revenue.”
That’s definitely true, so there is a problem there. But I’m just saying, pirating isn’t the only way to get unlimited access to a song, and if the DRM is broken and restricting you from playing it the song then you should definitely be able to crunch it.

Totally untrue. 192 kbps isn’t bad. Carving the file apart from lossless doesn’t necessarily hurt it much with decent bitrate. Switching it around once you’ve got it there is like trying to sculpt a another statue of the same size out of a previous statue instead of a new block of wood. Doesn’t work.

I meant that 192 kbps is good, so that even if it worsened the quality down to maybe the equivalent of 128 then it would still be fine. But they have pretty advanced methods out there for ensuring that the quality difference is small.

While you’re saving the internet from its poorly educated inhabitants, I was wondering if you might consider another topic…
I figure Facebook (and probably other sites) could do with an anonymous tip function, labeled “third-person FAIL”, next to published status updates. People reading updates could let the poster know that “Joe is wondering what I will eat for lunch” makes Joe look uneducated.

We will see…

@law: ouch. Low blow to the 10-year-old girls of the world.

I saw the YouTube feature appear after you joked about it in your comic and was amused. It’s completely fun to use, too - it makes everyone sound stupid.

Greatest.
I remember reading the comic and laughing, wishing that actually would happen. Then I heard from [adult swim] that someone implemented that feature and I started to freak.
That was the greatest day the internet has seen. Many thanks to you, sir Randall.
(Should I be alarmed that one of my re-captcha prompt words is “$60,000″?)

Just putting this out there… At the rate xkcd is going, it should be another year or two before all the readers of xkcd have completely changed the face of the intarwebs as we know it. I think we should exercise our power by doing what YTMND did to ebaumsworld, a massive assault on the frontlines of the forums. We will rout the trolls from their fiery domain, the OT forums.

This is brilliant! Now all we need is for it to read it out in the voice of Morgan Freeman!

@ Matthew Lloyd
Dear god, I was thinking the exact same thing.
You know what else might be cool? If they get pronunciations right, you could use this to proofread your essays or speeches… and one day have it in the voice of Morgan Freeman!

When I saw the audio preview function on YouTube, my first thoughts were:
1. Someone at YouTube reads XKCD? Sweet!
2. Maybe now YouTube will be a slightly more intelligent place!
Unfortunately, the second has yet to happen. But perhaps if we give it time…
October 24th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Funny?
Maybe, but it means that they had already a speech synthesizer made and tested. And right now it must be using about 20% of youtube’s servers’ capacity.

it has some abbreviations
est -> estate
ave -> avenue
too bad for latinists XD

I was pretty impressed — not only did I click on it without realizing it, because it’s on the left, but I actually edited my comment after hearing it. I’d say it works as designed. :)

Audio preview? I can’t effin believe it.

I just heard about this on Aljazeera. They did mention XKCD’s reasoning behind the feature, but didn’t mention XKCD.
